John Mulaney is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and producer born on August 26, 1982 in Chicago. He attended Georgetown University where he studied English and theology and also did improv, before moving to New York to pursue comedy. Early on, he performed stand-up and worked his way into television writing, eventually joining the writing staff of the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013. During his time there he co-created memorable characters (most famously Stefon) and developed a sharp comedic voice marked by observational humor, self-depiction, and tight-knit storytelling.
Mulaney’s career as a headlining comedian really soared with his stand-up specials. His 2012 special John Mulaney: New in Town established him beyond TV writing, and in 2015 his special John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid was widely hailed by critics as a major breakthrough. In 2018 he released John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City which won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and further cemented his place among the top comedians. Beyond stand-up, he has acted in TV and film, voiced characters (such as Andrew in Big Mouth), and co-starred on Broadway in Oh, Hello on Broadway with Nick Kroll.

He has also made headlines for major live milestones, including announcing a July 11, 2026 show at Chicago’s iconic Wrigley Field, making him the first comedian to ever perform there.
