Carmelo Anthony to New York Knicks

by Ben Kessler on February 21st, 2011 No Comments

Well it sounds like it's official: sources have informed ESPN that the New York Knicks have finally landed Carmelo Anthony. How will this affect Knicks tickets prices?

Being based in New York City, all of us here at SeatGeek have been waiting on the edge of our seats since last summer when rumors started to heat up around Melo heading to the Knicks. Here are the full details of the deal according to the Denver Post:

  • Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov will go to Denver
  • Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman will head to New York
  • The Nuggets obtain the Knicks' 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash

We'll have a full analysis once the team makes the trade official in the morning. In the meantime, tell us what you think about Carmelo Anthony going to the New York Knicks in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek.

Christmas Day NBA Games

by Mason on December 23rd, 2010 No Comments

Last month we took a look at how playing on Thanksgiving impacts ticket prices in the NFL and found that ticket prices were significantly higher for the games that were hosted by the Lions and the Cowboys.  Playing on Christmas in the NBA seems to have a similar effect on ticket prices in most cases.  However there is one caveat in that the NBA does not have a tradition of having the same teams host a Christmas Day game every year as the NFL does with respect to Thanksgiving.  This gives the NBA the luxury of setting up some blockbuster games for Christmas such as the Heat-Lakers while in the NFL some of the Thanksgiving Day games are not all that exciting on paper.

Christmas Day NBA Games

  • Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers: This is by far the most expensive and highly demanded ticket of the NBA season.  Tickets are averaging $566.95 on the secondary market.  A ticket to this game will run you about four times as much as the average Lakers home game which is $144.98 per ticket.  Fans just can't wait to see the big 3 square off against the defending champions. This game should not disappoint, the Heat and the Lakers are both coming into this game with 21 wins and they are both two of the hottest teams in the league.
  • Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic: The average ticket price to the Celtics-Magic Christmas Day game is $141.94, up almost $12 since Thanksgiving. Tickets to this game are around 144% more expensive than the average Orlando Magic home game which is around $58 per ticket.  It should be interesting to see how the new Magic team plays against the Celtics on Christmas.
  • Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks: The red hot Bulls are heading to Madison Square Garden to face off against Amare and the Knicks. Tickets to see the Bulls-Knicks Christmas Day game are around $135 on average which is 36% higher than the average tickets to Knicks home games this season.
  • Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City Thunder: Playing on Christmas Day is not driving the prices up for the Nuggets-Thunder game.  Ticket prices for this game and all Oklahoma City Thunder home games average around $57 per ticket on the secondary market.
  • Portland Trail Blazers at Golden State Warriors: This is the one Christmas Day NBA game that is actually cheaper than the home teams season average ticket price.  Maybe Warriors fans have out of town plans or would rather play with their new presents than go to Oracle Arena to see the Trail Blazers take on the Warriors.  Ticket prices for this game are $57,  just 70% of the Warriors season average.  If you're in the Oakland area on Christmas Day this is a great opportunity to go see a Warriors game at a discount.

Christmas Day NBA: Heat at Lakers, Game of the Season

by Mason on December 20th, 2010 No Comments

Heat vs LakersWe took a look at the upcoming Christmas Day NBA games almost a month ago when the Miami Heat were struggling with an 8-6 record and the LA Lakers were unstoppable with a 12-2 record. Even then when the Heat were still trying to figure things out, were not living up to the hype, and the game Heat-Lakers game looked like it could be a disaster for the Heat, the average price of a ticket to the Heat at Lakers Christmas Day game was still $507 per ticket.

Since then, the Heat have managed to figure things out and are currently on a 12 game winning streak. The Lakers have continued their dominance even though they hit a bit of a speed bump with a 4 game slide and are currently 21-7 winning 8 of their last 9 games. With less than a week until tip-off, this game is looking more and more like the game of the season. Over the past month, the average price of a ticket to this game has gone up $42 to $549 per ticket. As a means of comparison the average price of a ticket to a Lakers home game excluding the Christmas day game against the Heat is approximately $144 per ticket, just 26.2% of the price of the Heat-Lakers Christmas Day tickets.

Heat vs Lakers

Lakers tickets have been some of the most expensive in the league since the beginning of the season and the same goes for tickets to Heat road games.  There is a huge demand to see how LeBron, Wade and Bosch will match up against Kobe and the Lakers.   Couple this all together and we get the most expensive ticket on the secondary market for the entire NBA season.  Do you think this game will live up to expectations?  Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek.

LeBron Brings The Heat To Cleveland

by Ben Kessler on November 29th, 2010 No Comments

In what is being touted as the revenge match of the season, this Thursday LeBron James will return to his hometown of Cleveland to take on his former Cavaliers. With the Miami Heat's paltry record, questionable performance of coach Erik Spoelstra, and landsliding ticket prices, analysts are up in arms over the outcome of this game.

Cleveland fans have made it perfectly clear that they will do everything in their power to make LeBron feel unwelcome at the Quicken Loans Arena, donning anti-LeBron gear, booing or laughing him off the court, and more. This has caused the Cavs to beef up security inside and outside the arena, to prevent any full on riots.

Despite all of the ruckus, what Cavs fans don't want you to know is how much money they're willing to shell out to see LeBron in person. Thursday's game is commanding the highest average ticket prices for the entire season, followed only by the next time the Heat arrive in Cleveland in March.

Take a look at the Top 5 Cleveland Cavaliers games of the season:

  • It's not surprising that the highest priced Cavs home games this season are when the Heat come to town.
  • Next are the Los Angeles Lakers who historically bring some of the highest ticket prices in the NBA while on the road.
  • A sharp decrease is seen in the #4 highest priced game against the San Antonio Spurs, an almost 35% drop off.

Will LeBron cut through the boos and bring the Heat to Cleveland? Let us know what you think in the comments or on Twitter @SeatGeek.
